Versatile expertise

The Prison and Probation Service is responsible for the implementation of remand imprisonment and the enforcement of community sanctions and prison sentences. The Prison and Probation Service employs approximately 2 600 officials with various duties.

Criminal sanctions officials

The employees of the Prison and Probation Service carry out both expert duties as well as client and individual work. As a result of the organisational reform of the prison and probation services (2010), the job titles of some of the professionals carrying out client and individual work were changed into criminal sanctions official or senior criminal sanctions official.

Within the prison services, i.e. the enforcement of remand imprisonment and prison sentences, the emphasis is on guarding and supervision duties as well as on education, rehabilitation and social work. The professionals of prison services work either in assessment centres, prisons, or release units.

The duties related to the enforcement of community sanctions and supervision of conditionally released prisoners consist mainly of client work. The professionals of community sanctions work in community sanctions offices or local units subject to an office.

Other duties

Along with the criminal sanctions officials, the field also employs people, who carry out administrative and expert duties as well as other specific professions, such as instructors, social workers, teachers, or chaplains.
