Training as a prison officer

The Training Institute for Prison and Probation Services is the only education institution in Finland that provides qualification for supervision and guidance duties in prison. In the Training Institute, which is located in Vantaa, it is possible to complete the qualification in prison and probation services as well as in-service training that maintains and furthers professional skills.

The degree programme in prison and probation services lasts for 16 months and 9 months of that period is paid on-the-job training in prison. The studies cover a wide range of theories and practices on the legality, ethics, security, supervision, and rehabilitation in the criminal sanctions field. The employment situation in the criminal sanctions field is good and, in particular, prison officers carrying out supervision duties are often employed as soon as they have completed the basic qualification.

After completing the degree programme in prison and probation services, the students can apply for further studies in universities or universities of applied sciences. Laurea University of Applied Sciences arranges a Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Social Services that specialises in correctional services in cooperation with the Training Institute for Prison and Probation Services. After the Bachelor’s Degree Programme and three years of work experience, it is possible to apply for a Master’s Degree Programme in management and development in the social services and criminal sanctions field.
