Release from prison

The preparation for your release will be started well before your release. If you serve a short sentence, the preparation may be started right after you arrive at prison. If your sentence is long, the planning starts about six months before your release. Probationary liberty under supervision is part of a planned release.

The planning of your release begins by assessing your coping skills and need for services. The assessment is carried out by the official responsible for your guidance. It takes into account your life situation as a whole.

With your consent, your release is prepared in cooperation with the social welfare, healthcare, substance abuse treatment, housing and employment authorities of your municipality of residence so that you will get the services you need. If you are placed under supervision when you are released, the probation office of the area where you will be staying after your release will be involved in the preparation of your release plan.

In addition to the municipalities, many organisations and third sector operators provide and develop support services linked to the release process. Such organisations include, among others the Finnish Foundation for Supporting Ex-offenders , Silta Association and KRIS Finland.
