Prison leaves

You may be granted prison leave based on the length of your sentence term when you have served two-thirds of your prison term. In addition, you may be granted prison leave for an important or a particularly important reason whenever the grounds for such prison leave are adequate. The prerequisites for prison leave for an important or particularly important reason are quite strict and the application has to be justified and include necessary attachments.

Prison leave may be granted based on the length of the sentence term if it is considered likely that you will comply with the conditions and it supports your sentence plan. All known factors regarding you that might affect your compliance with the conditions, are taken into consideration when making the decision on your application. Such factors include, among others, possible disciplinary infractions and positive substance control tests. Your behaviour affects the decision on prison leave.

The maximum amount of prison leave based on the length of the sentence term is three days within a two-month period. The beginning of the first prison leave period is determined based on the rule of having served two-thirds your prison term. Prison leave for an important or particularly important reason does not affect the calculation of the periods.

The prison leave process requires that you leave your application early enough before the desired time of prison leave. In practice, you should leave your application for prison leave based on the length of the sentence term at least two weeks before the desired time. The maximum amount of prison leave based on the length of the sentence term is three days within a two-month period.

If you apply for prison leave for an important or particularly important reason, the urgency of the matter is taken into account. Most prison leave applications are decided by the prisons. If you are a life sentence prisoner or ordered to serve your entire sentence, your prison leave is decided by the Director General of the Prison and Probation Service.

In specific cases, the travel costs related to prison leave may be paid from state funds. Prison leave is counted as part of the sentence term if you comply with the conditions.
