Payment card used in prison

Prisoners in closed prisons get to use a personal payment card, which is kept in the possession of the prison staff. Prisoners in open prisons get a payment card if they do not have a bank card connected to their personal bank account.

The cash you bring with you in euro when you arrive in prison is loaded on the payment card. The benefits paid by the Prison and Probation Service loaded on the payment card unless you are in an open prison or released and do not have a personal bank account. You can only use the prepaid card approved by the Prison and Probation Service. You get the card in your possession when you go on prison leave.

You can use the payment card to make purchases in the prison canteen. In addition, you can use the payment card outside the prison to pay in places that accept a chip card and withdraw a maximum of EUR 200 per month at cash machines in Finland. The payment card works in the EU/EEA countries.

The payment card is not an actual bank account and interest is not paid on the money loaded on the card. The payment card is used by entering a personal PIN code.

Paying fines

A prisoner’s enforced fines are paid via the Prison and Probation Service. The money for the fine has to be transferred to the joint prisoner account of the Prison and Probation Service. A receipt of the transferred money meant for the fine has to be attached to an email and sent to the following address: prepaid.rise(at)om.fi.

Prisoners can also pay their fine in prison with a bank card by using the payment terminal. Bringing cash in prison is not recommended.

Changes concerning the payment card

The previous prisoner payment card system expired on 30 November 2023. Money can no longer be transferred to the payment cards. Possible transfers will return to the account of the payer automatically.

Family members can transfer money to prisoners via the joint prisoner account of the Prison and Probation Service.
