Work

The objective of work activities is to support you to live without crime, offer meaningful work and support your functioning capacity and employment plans. This will improve your chances of getting employment and income after your release. Moreover, work aims to make the life in prison more normal.

Prison work is in line with work carried out in society in general. In addition, work activities follow the methods commonly applied in vocational rehabilitation.

It is already possible to complete vocational qualifications fully or partly in several fields. The staff supervising the work activities are also responsible for the guidance of the on-the-job training.

Inside the prisons, prisoners may work in domestic care, real estate maintenance and workshops of different fields. The products made in the workshops are listed on the website vankilatuote.fi . Some products, such as cell furniture and prison clothes, are made for prisons.

The workshops and working groups in prisons cover, among others, the following fields of work:
  • carpentry
  • metal industry
  • construction
  • sign production (traffic signs and number plates)
  • packing and assembly
  • horticulture and agriculture
  • textile and clothing production
  • car repair
  • restoration
  • textile care (cooperation agreement with the Finnish Defence Force)

In addition, different administrative branches employ prisoners in open prisons.
