Due to the strike, activities may be restricted in Vantaa Prison and Hämeenlinna Prison on 15–16 April 2025
The trade unions representing prison staff have announced a strike in Vantaa Prison and Hämeenlinna Prison on 15–16 April 2025. The strike is linked to ongoing negotiations for a collective agreement for public officials in central government. If the strike starts, the prison activities will be restricted.
The trade unions have announced that public officials present will not be carrying out all their normal duties. For this reason, only meals and health care services will be arranged for prisoners on those days. It is likely that, during the strike, it will not be possible to go outside, participate in activities or contact people outside the prison. There will also be changes to prisoner transports. As a result, not all scheduled court hearings will be arranged as planned.
“It is unfortunate that the strike will impact prisoners and their families, but also the work of the courts and the prosecution service. During the strike, we will prioritise prison safety and security and the occupational safety of our staff,” says Anna Arola-Järvi, Director General of the Prison and Probation Service.
The aim is for prison activities to return to normal in Vantaa Prison and Hämeenlinna Prison after the strike on Thursday 17 April.
