The prison employs approximately 57 staff members who carry out various duties.

Activities

Kerava Prison offers rehabilitative work that prepares prisoners for reintegration into society. Prisoners’ work activities are organised in collaboration with external partners and include, among others, local park maintenance, woodwork, metalwork and basic prison maintenance.

A wide range of programmes and rehabilitation aiming to support a life free from crime are provided based on individually assessed needs. Rehabilitation is arranged both in groups and individually. The primary goal is to enhance prisoners' ability to manage their lives when they are released.

Prisoners may participate in education preparing for a qualification, which is provided by Live Foundation. Studies are guided and supported according to the needs outlined in each prisoner’s sentence plan.

The prison has quite limited facilities for free time activities in relation to the number of prisoner places. There is a gym, a library and dining facilities as well as outdoor sports areas, where prisoners can spend their free time according to the daily schedule.

Accessibility of the visiting facilities

The visiting facilities of the prison are accessible. A designated parking space is available for visitors with reduced mobility.

History

While the new open prison in Kerava has a short history, the area has a long-standing prison tradition dating back to the 1890s. Initially, they built a reform school, which was changed to Kerava Juvenile Prison in 1927. The old prison buildings are no longer in use. The new open prison facilities were opened in 2020.
