Mikkeli Prison
Mikkeli Prison is a closed prison with 110 places for men. It holds fine default prisoners and other sentenced prisoners as well as remand prisoners. In addition, the prison is in charge of prisoner transports within Southeastern Finland.
Mikkeli Prison is located in the city centre of Mikkeli, just a short walk from all public transport connections.

The prison employs approximately 57 staff members.
Activities
The prison offers a variety of work activities for prisoners, including clothing maintenance for the Finnish Defence Forces, food distribution, cleaning, property maintenance and carpentry.
In the carpentry workshop, prisoners make products for sale and by order. Ready-made carpentry products can be purchased from the online store Livekauppa.fi. Inquiries about ordering custom-made products can be sent via e-mail to [email protected] or [email protected].
Prisoners can complete their unfinished basic education and general upper secondary education studies or parts of a vocational upper secondary qualification in wood industry or in cleaning and property maintenance services by demonstrating their practical competence. In addition, the prison arranges education preparing for a qualification.
The prison offers various programmes aimed at addressing prisoners’ criminal behaviour and substance abuse, group activities focusing on fatherhood and masculinity, and discussions about children and family life.
Free time activities include, among others, sports, music and access to library services.
Visiting a prisoner
Supervised visits
Supervised visits of prisoners’ families and friends are arranged on Saturdays between 12.00 and 14.45.- Visits start on the hour and last 45 minutes.
- Visitors must arrive and report to the prison 15 minutes before the booked visiting time.
- Prisoners may receive visits from their spouse and children from the same household, or up to two other visitors.
- Prisoners inform their visitors of the booked visiting time.
- Visitors must present a valid photo ID.
- Visitors have to pass through a metal detector when entering the prison and store their personal belongings, such as coat, wallet and phone, in a locker in the waiting area.
- Intoxicated persons are not allowed in the visiting facilities.
- Visitors and prisoners may not touch each other during supervised visits.
- No items may be given or received during the visit.
- Visitors may bring a small amount of goods to the prisoner they are visiting, but they cannot, however, give them straight to the prisoner. A small amount is approximately one normal-sized plastic bag (30 litres) of goods.
- Visitors cannot bring cash to prisoners. Money to a prisoner must be transferred to the payment card the prisoner has received from the prison.
Visits by a child
Visits by a child are intended for children under 15 years of age.- They are arranged both on weekdays and weekends.
- The duration is usually one hour.
- Letters or other goods may not be handed over during the visit.
Unsupervised visits
Unsupervised visits (family visits) last three hours at a time. They are arranged:- on Saturdays and Sundays at 9.00–12.00 and 12.30–15.30
- on Wednesdays at 12.30–15.30
- at other times at the discretion of the prison.
Communication via video connection
Prisoners may communicate with distant family and friends via video call. A video call can last up to 30 minutes.
Accessibility of the facilities
The prison’s visiting facilities are accessible. Please contact the prison staff in advance about the need for accessibility so that an escort can be arranged.
A designated parking space for visitors with disabilities or reduced mobility is located near the main entrance.
