Vilppula Prison

Vilppula Prison is an open prison with 73 places for men. It holds sentenced prisoners.

Vilppula Prison is located about 90 kilometres from bith Jyväskylä and Tampere. It is approximately five kilometres from Vilppula railway station.

Vilppula Prison employs approximately 30 staff members.

Activities

Prisoners can participate in work activities such as property and outdoor area maintenance, woodwork, metalwork and greenhouse cultivation. Greenhouse products are available for purchase at the prison's garden centre.

The prison offers education preparing for a qualification. Vocational education and training is organised in cooperation with an educational institution. Available fields are wood processing, metalwork and machinery, cleaning and property maintenance, catering and horticulture. Prisoners can also complete basic education studies in prison.

The prison has good sports and free time facilities, including a gym, a sports hall and a music room. Prisoners may also visit a library outside the prison once a week.

Visiting a prisoner

Visits are arranged on Saturdays and public holidays between 9.30 and 14.00. Prisoners must inform the staff of their visitors’ name, date of birth and address in advance.

Accessibility of the facilities

The prison is not fully accessible, and there is no accessible toilet for visitors. Visitors with disabilities or reduced mobility may require special arrangements. Please contact the staff for more information.

Visitors with reduced mobility can park near the visiting facilities. If a vehicle needs to be parked outside the designated parking area, the prison control room staff must be notified in advance.

History

Vilppula Prison was established on 1 October 1988. It replaced a reform school and the school’s whole staff continued working in the prison.

The buildings are protected due to their significance as an Art Nouveau architectural ensemble. They were designed by Hugo Lindberg and primarily constructed between 1901 and 1905.
