Statutes and oversight of legality

Oversight of legality refers to the procedures used to oversee the implementation of statutes and good governance in the activities of an authority. It can also help to prevent incorrect procedures. In the Prison and Probation Service, internal oversight of legality focuses on overseeing the rights and the treatment of prisoners, remand prisoners and persons serving community sanctions.

The main forms of oversight of legality are inspections and the handling of administrative complaints. Additionally, tasks include processing requests for an administrative review and statements by the Parliamentary Ombudsman, as well as coordinating the self-supervision of prisons and probation offices.

Each year, the Judicial Unit draws up a plan that outlines the annual priorities, inspections and other topical issues. In the annual report of the Judicial Unit, we describe the implementation of the annual plan and the main findings of the oversight of legality.
